Cased apothecary scales by Becker’s Sons of Rotterdam, circa late 19th century. The metal feet are adjustable to ensure a level and stable base for the scales, there is a single drawer to house the weights, and the glass panel to the front slides up to provide access. The scales come with the original box of weights, and a hand written note from the previous owner, who had the scales since 1950!
Becker’s sons were establish in 1872 in Rotterdam by the two eldest sons of Christian Becker, who already had his own family run company manufacturing scales. The company moved to Gelderland Brummen in 1914 to escape the traffic of Rotterdam as the scales became more sensitive and needed to be manufactured in a vibration free environment.
